Sigiriya and Polonnaruva, Sri Lanka

I love travelling and exploring new cultures so, while on honeymoon in Sri Lanka, we spent a few days travelling around the cultural triangle exploring the history of such a beautiful country. On the first day of the tour, we went to Sigiriya and to Polonnaruva.

Sigiriya is one of Sri Lanka’s mos iconic and dramatic sights. Created in the 5th century A.D by King Kashyapa, Sigiriya flat-topped summit contains the ruins of an ancient civilisation. You just have to get there first…

While it looks spectacular from the bottom, to get the full effect of Sigiriya, you need to climb a few hundred steps up near the vertical rock face but it is truely worth it. We ascended and descended the rock in a little under an hour and a half as we had a full day ahead but, if/when we go back to Sri Lanka, we would love to explore the area a little more.

Our second stop of the day was at Polonnaruwa, the medival capital of Sri Lanka. 800 years ago, the kings ruled central Sri Lanka from Polonnaruwa which meant that it was a thriving commercial and religious centre.

Walking through the ruins, it was hard to believe that the buildings and temples were built so long ago – especially the Royal Palace which once had 50 rooms spread over seven stories.
